Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Strong Group are working with a rapidly growing M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) building services specialist based in Hertfordshire, delivering projects across sectors including commercial, residential, healthcare, and retail.

With project values reaching up to £10M, they have experienced a significant period of growth and are now looking to strengthen their design team. They are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on a permanent basis.

Job Summary:
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the mechanical design of complex M&E projects, ensuring high-quality, innovative, and cost-effective solutions are delivered to clients. You will collaborate closely with the wider project team, including electrical engineers, estimators, and project managers, to ensure seamless project delivery from concept to completion. Your expertise will be critical in shaping the mechanical design aspects of projects, contributing to the overall growth and success of the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design process for M&E projects, including HVAC, plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems, from concept through to detailed design.
  • Produce detailed mechanical design calculations, technical drawings, and specifications that meet project requirements, client expectations, and relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers and the wider project team to ensure integrated and coordinated M&E designs.
  • Liaise with clients, architects, and other external stakeholders to ensure designs meet their needs and project goals.
  • Oversee the preparation of tender documentation and support the commercial team in securing projects.
  • Review designs and drawings to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations, including CIBSE guidelines.
  • Conduct site visits and surveys to assess design requirements, check progress, and ensure projects align with the design intent.
  • Identify opportunities for value engineering and innovative design solutions to optimise project efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Mentor and guide junior mechanical engineers, providing technical support and fostering their development.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, technologies, and best practices to ensure the company remains at the forefront of mechanical design.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer within the M&E or building services industry, with experience in leading design projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical services, including HVAC, plumbing, and ventilation systems.
  • Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and other relevant mechanical design tools.
  • Ability to produce detailed mechanical design calculations, drawings, and specifications.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant codes, regulations, and standards (e.g., CIBSE, ASHRAE).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, architects, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A proactive and problem-solving approach, with a focus on delivering high-quality designs.
  • Relevant qualifications in mechanical engineering, building services, or a related discipline (e.g., HND, HNC, degree level).
