Construction Buyer

Location: St Albans (Fully Office-Based)
Salary: Up to £50,000 (DOE)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent


Role Summary

A growing refurbishment and fit-out contractor is looking to appoint a Construction Buyer to support its expanding delivery team.

This is a key role within the business, responsible for managing procurement across Cat A & Cat B fit-out and refurbishment projects, ensuring materials and subcontract packages are sourced competitively and delivered on programme.

The successful candidate will play a crucial part in maintaining strong supplier relationships and supporting smooth project delivery from pre-construction through to completion.

Projects include:

  • Commercial Cat A & Cat B fit-outs

  • Major refurbishment works

  • Historic building refurbishments (sympathetic approach required)

  • School and educational environments

  • Critical/specialist engineering environments


Key Responsibilities

  • Procurement of materials and subcontract packages across refurbishment and fit-out projects

  • Preparing and issuing enquiries to suppliers and subcontractors

  • Negotiating best value pricing and terms

  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and schedules to identify procurement requirements

  • Placing orders and managing supplier performance

  • Ensuring materials are delivered in line with programme requirements

  • Monitoring cost movements and reporting to commercial/project teams

  • Building and maintaining strong supplier relationships

  • Supporting pre-construction teams with pricing input where required

  • Assisting with value engineering and cost-saving initiatives


Project Scope Exposure

Projects may include:

Cat A Fit Out:

  • Raised floors and suspended ceilings

  • Basic M&E services

  • Fire detection systems

  • HVAC installation

  • Basic internal finishes

Cat B Fit Out:

  • Reception and front-of-house installations

  • Fully fitted kitchens and office amenities

  • Partitioning (meeting rooms, offices, breakout areas)

  • Re-routing AC and power

  • IT infrastructure installation

  • Workstations, furniture and brand detailing


Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years’ experience as a Buyer within construction

  • Experience working on refurbishment or fit-out projects preferred

  • Strong understanding of construction materials and subcontract packages

  • Commercial awareness and negotiation skills

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications

  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail

  • Confident working in a fast-paced project environment
