Contractor Selection to Begin for Cambridge Children’s Hospital Project

The construction of Cambridge’s new specialist paediatric hospital is advancing, with contractor selection set to commence soon.

The Cambridge Children’s Hospital project took a significant step forward this month, as the outline business case received approval from both the UK Treasury and the Department of Health. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that the project now has the necessary funding streams secured to proceed.

The next phase will involve launching the contractor selection process. While the full business case is still pending approval, the Trust announced that the main contractor tender is expected to open in January 2025. Construction work on the state-of-the-art hospital is anticipated to begin in 2026, with the facility slated for completion in early 2029.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the Cambridge Children’s Hospital will span five storeys and cover 35,000 square metres. It will also feature a dedicated 5,000 square metre research institute operated by Cambridge University. The project represents a partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, and Cambridge University. The hospital will provide integrated mental and physical healthcare for children across the East of England and facilitate groundbreaking research into childhood illnesses.

Norwich-based contractor RG Carter has already commenced preconstruction work on the 46,200 square metre brownfield site, completing groundworks and infrastructure preparation last month. The main works will follow once the contractor is appointed.

Mace Consult has been selected as the project manager, working alongside a design team that includes leading firms such as Hawkins\Brown, White Arkitekter, Ramboll, MJ Medical, and Edge.

This £214.9 million development is set to transform paediatric care in the region, combining advanced medical treatment with pioneering research to create a centre of excellence for children’s health.
