In a significant advancement for the UK’s renewable energy landscape, Statera Energy has announced plans to construct a 680-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park, located eight miles southwest of Manchester. This project, known as Carrington Storage, is set to become one of Europe’s largest battery storage facilities upon its expected completion in 2026.
The 12-hectare site, formerly home to the Carrington coal-fired power station until 1991, has been repurposed into a hub for low-carbon energy initiatives. Under Carlton Power’s stewardship, the area has already seen the development of a flexible gas-fired power station and has agreements in place for a £300 million liquid air energy storage project by Highview Power. Additionally, Carlton Power has secured planning consent for up to 2 gigawatts of BESS capacity and a green hydrogen production facility of up to 200 megawatts on the site.
Statera’s Carrington Storage project represents a substantial addition to the UK’s energy storage capacity, which is crucial for balancing supply and demand as the nation increases its reliance on intermittent renewable energy sources. By storing excess energy generated during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak times, such facilities enhance grid stability and contribute to a more resilient energy system.
Despite recent challenges in the battery storage sector, including fluctuating energy prices and underutilization of assets, Statera remains optimistic. The company attributes its confidence to advancements in the National Energy System Operator’s dispatch systems and decreasing battery production costs.
Looking ahead, Statera plans to invest £7 billion in energy storage projects by 2030, aiming to achieve a total capacity of 7 gigawatts. This includes the Kintore Hydrogen project in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, which seeks to harness wind power to produce green hydrogen for industrial applications.
