Top 10 UK Construction Projects to Watch in 2025

1. Lower Thames Crossing  

Planned to alleviate traffic congestion at the Dartford Crossing, the Lower Thames Crossing will be Britain’s longest road tunnel at 2.6 miles across the River Thames. The £9 billion scheme will improve link between Kent and Essex, and construction is set to begin in 2026 and complete by 2031. 

2. Transpennine Route Upgrade 

This massive programme places the upgrade of Manchester to York line, improving capacity and shortening journey times over the Pennines, first. The largest milestones are the electrification of the Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge line by 2025, creating a cleaner and more efficient railway. 

3. A9 Dualling Project  

Aims to enhance safety and shorten travelling times, the A9 Dualling Project covers the dualling of 80 miles of single carriageway from Perth to Inverness. As a surprise twist, the section between Tomatin and Moy will be constructed mainly to start as early as spring 2025 and be ready by 2028.  

4. Bankside at Colliers Yard  

One of the projects in Salford, Greater Manchester’s Colliers Yard, Bankside is a 43-storey residential tower standing at 129 meters tall. It will be completed in 2025 and will provide 444 apartments to the urban regeneration of the area.  

5. Viadux  

Located in Manchester’s Castlefield area, the first phase of the Viadux development project is a 40-story residential apartment building to be 139 meters tall, its completion achieved by 2024. The second part project entails a 76-story tower skyscraper, its approval which if achieved, will see it feature as one of Britain’s tallest homes.

6. Statera Energy’s 680MW Battery Storage in Manchester  

As part of a major boost to the UK’s renewable energy supply chain, Statera Energy announced plans for building a 680-megawatt battery energy storage facility in the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park, eight miles southwest of Manchester. Carrington Storage, expected to be delivered in 2026, is to be among Europe’s largest battery storage plants.  

7. Cambridge Children’s Hospital  

Cambridge specialist children’s hospital is currently being built, and the selection process for a contractor will be launched in the very near future. The new hospital will be delivering cutting-edge health care to kids and an extensive upgrade to medical facilities in the region (currently scheduled to open in 2029).  

8. Modular and Prefabricated Construction Initiatives  

The construction industry is increasingly employing prefabricated and modular building techniques to enhance efficiency and sustainability. These involve the off-site assembly of components and transporting them for rapid on-site fitting to reduce construction time and waste.  

9. Government’s Construction Plans and Sustainability Initiatives
